What am I thankful for? 2023 Recap

Every year, I start out with a list of things I hope to accomplish and it somewhat stresses me out (how, when, why?). So this year I will instead start it with a list of 2023 memories and things that make me happy.

Some of the images I took with my phone, some with my real camera, and some where thankfully captured by other people and shared with me.

I know that not everyone will be interested – its ok. This post is more for me and my memories. But if it inspires others to look back and separate some favorite photos of their own from 2023, that is a plus.

Here’s to making more wonderful and amazing memories in 2024!

January

Me capturing myself in the rain, one of Alex’s last competitions with Washtenaw Edge, Sophie and Alex so happy to play in the snow during a photo shoot, Alex’s last HS Basketball season, Riley during the Albion WBB vs Hope game (Albion WON)

Things I am thankful for - January

February

Washtenaw Edge Seniors – hard to believe my girl has been skating for 12 years.

Things I am thankful for - February

March

Alex’s last State Competition, me with family, capturing nature on a solo trip.

April

Alex’s last Spring Show with Chelsea Figure Skating Club – is there anything better than you and a bestie being the main characters? Our new tradition of Easter Rocks, one of my granddaughters favorite activities (the swing), a reflection in a puddle of the playhouse built by my FIL for his grandchildren many years ago, me and my girls.

Things I am thankful for - April

May

More family time, Alex’s Senior Prom, fun times with Riley and Bryce.

Things I am thankful for - May

June

I had a hard time narrowing this month down – so many images of Rome and our European cruise. I think the below are some good highlights of how thankful I am to have the opportunity for this trip, and the time our family spent together.

Things I am thankful for - June

July

The European cruse continues – everything from formal night, to celebrating Independence Day on a ship, a Chipmunk sandwich to Pirate night. And a few of my favorite excursions – volcanos and hot springs, to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Things I am thankful for - July

August

And then…Alex’s last showcase nationals. So thankful for the memories over the years, and her coaches support in her Journey. Alex has officially medaled in every Showcase Nationals she attended other than her first one. And we visited multiple states during her off time this year – a couple of our favorites were walking the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine, and a sunset visit to a beach in Noank, Connecticut. And then more family time, and a solo trip to the Windsor River Walk with an amazing view of Detroit.

Things I am thankful for - August

September

The best part of September? Bloggycon – where I not only get to see other Bloggy friends and learn new things, but also get to invite family and enjoy Cedar Point with them. Breakfast with my mom, and rock hunting with my granddaughter – a perfect month.

Things I am thankful for - September

October

I didn’t take many pics in October, but two of my favorites are below. Maizie and I did not win the Howloween contest this year, but how cute are we as Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter?

Things I am thankful for - October

November

And then…basketball season starts in Rileys senior year at Albion. So proud of all she has accomplished. Another one of my favorites – Alex and Jeremy recreating an iconic photo of them together 14 years ago when Alex was 4.

Things I am thankful for - November

December

And to wrap up the year – more of Riley’s basketball, and her happy face during a game. Me starting a photography workshop to get to know myself – I love the creativity it is bringing out in me. And of course family during the holidays.

Things I am thankful for - December

Looking forward to even more great memories in 2024!

Videography with my phone

From Photography to Videography

Photography has been a huge passion of mine for many years but I had never really tried or been interested in videography with my phone (or any other means). However as I started leaving my big girl camera at home more often and using my phone more and more for photography, I also started taking more video.

I have never been very good though at getting the right clips, narrowing things down, putting things together, etc. Yes, I’m a photographer but videos are a whole other realm and I wasn’t sure I was cut out for it.

But…I decided to try and I’m so glad I did. I looked up several online courses and decided to go with DIY Family Films. Yes it’s geared toward Family Films and memory making, but I believe the lessons are pretty applicable overall. Not gonna lie – my creative juices are flowing!

While my first video isn’t perfect I’d say it’s a good start – especially since it was all done on my phone!! To protect my phone for the underwater shots I used this waterproof case I purchased from Amazon.

As I’m sure you have heard many photographers say – the best camera is the one you have with you.

Two Items On My Happy Shelf Got Me Back On Track

This post contains affiliate links. If you use these links to purchase something I may earn a small commission at no cost to you. You can read my full disclaimer here.

Today I chose to make a Facebook post about two items on what I call my Happy Shelf. A small Amethyst, and a Tree of Life Charm.

The Amethyst Crystal is there for intuition and balance, and the Tree of Life Charm came with a small card with some very important reminders.

The meaning of my Tree of Life Charm

I posted more as a reminder to myself as to why I added some of the things to my shelf, but as people commented on my post it made me pause and think about this past weekend.

The day I was so disappointed in myself because I was already in the first week of January seeing myself on track to FAIL at one of the goals I had set for myself. That goal? To post at least once a week on this blog and I hadn’t written anything during the time I scheduled.

What does my Happy Shelf Facebook Post have to do with not meeting my blogging goals you may ask?

As people started commenting on my Facebook post I started to observe a few things.

  1. I don’t always realize how much people appreciate the small things (like me sharing my Happy Shelf!), and I maybe need to write about those more
  2. I have learned so much about blogging over the years and I am so Type A that I have been immensely intent on “following the rules” as far as creating a “successful blog”. But…the typical blogging type that fits into the rules does not fit with my personality. This makes it difficult for me to be inspired to write.
  3. It’s time to say Fuck it and start doing this blog my way. I’m not really a “fit in the box” kind of person so I’m not sure why I ever thought my blog should be.

As my brain worked through all of those thoughts, I continued to look at my Tree of Life Charm. Yes, I WILL let my light shine for all to see.

Then I wrote this blog post.

And now, as my Tree of Life instructs…

“Celebrate Life’s victories, no matter how small they may be.”

From Planning to Completing – How to Keep Sh*t Together

This post contains affiliate links. If you use these links to purchase something I may earn a small commission at no cost to you. You can read my full disclaimer here.

There was a time in my life when people asked me how I managed to keep everything together from planning to completing and get it all done. From my day job to my photography side business, to my four kids in sports to managing the household – yes I did do it all.

Now that I’m doing a bit less as my kids are getting older and I stopped taking photography clients even I’m baffled as to how I got through some of those years!

Though my current responsibilities and goals moving forward have changed somewhat, I feel even busier sometimes as I set my sights on new goals.

Thankfully the same tools I have used for many years have not let me down yet. Some of the tools I just started using this year and I’m excited about!

Ready to get your sh*t together? Below are the Top 5 Tools I use

Google Calendar (iOS / Android) – Yes, yes I know. Everyone already knows about this. But I have to mention it because it is key to me keeping my sh*t together.

Everyone in my family has a separate Google account, and we all have access to each other’s calendars. This is extremely helpful especially since my daughter in college puts her classes and basketball schedule on hers. It makes it so much easier for planning.

gTask Pro (iOS / Android) – I have tried several “To Do” list type Apps and this was the one that I finally stayed with forever.

You can separate tasks by Groups/categories, which can be colored. I have mine separated by Habits, Top 3, Online, Household, Errands, Projects.

You can create tasks with sub tasks (and subtasks under the first subtask). You can set tasks to repeat, alert (or not) and it can also sync with your google calendar if you want it to. It is a one time $5.99 purchase.

Checklist+ (iOS) – Ok, why would I need two check list apps you ask? Because even with the categories in gTask Pro, I was getting overwhelmed and distracted when I saw blogging stuff and home stuff together.

So I decided to use one app for my home life and one for my Blog.

I had a really hard time finding another app that I liked enough to actually use but this one did fit the bill for my blogging lists. It has many of the same features as gTasks. Groups/Categories that can be colored, tasks with subtasks, set to repeat, etc.

It does sync to iCloud data and I keep the list on both my phone and iPad. This is a great place not only for my blogging “To Do’s” but I have a list for ideas that randomly pop into my head too.

Structured (iOS) – I have a love/hate relationship with this app. I love that it keeps me on track by reminding me when I should be starting and ending each activity every day. I hate when it reminds me that I’ve failed to do what I should have.

For us Type A folks out there though – this is a good one. It allows you to “structure” your days and stay on track to complete your goals.

For parts of your routine that are repeated daily/weekly/monthly you can add it to structured on a repeated schedule.

It allows you to see how much of your day is being used with for example a morning routine, breakfast, work, lunch, work, errands, etc. And as long as you add a wake up/bed time it tells you how much time you have left to schedule for productive things.

You know, instead of watching True Crime TV or something. Not that I do that.

The best part? It syncs with Google Calendar (the calendars I tell it to) so I don’t need to add scheduled items to two apps and it sends you reminders to keep you on track.

You can also edit and delete as necessary. I have added my work schedule, a blogging schedule and an exercise schedule so far – go me!

Simple Mind Pro (iOS / Android) – I’ve told you a lot about how I keep going, but what about pre-planning and brainstorming? For that the best app I’ve found is Mind Maps.

I love the different formats of maps it allows you to create. So far I have used it for creating my website, starting my content calendar, and goal setting for 2023 and forward. It is perfect for either solo or group brainstorming. Yes this app requires a one time purchase, but it is well worth it in my opinion.

And A New Addition for This Year

One major way I mixed things up this year was by getting a 2023 Yearly Wall Calendar.

I was getting so overwhelmed trying to keep track of everything digitally and wanted a way to see my entire year at a glance. For brainstorming, pre-planning, or even just a reminder of the fun things I have coming my way as I slug my way through a work day.

There are many choices out there, but I wanted one that was a size that would fit well in my she shed and look cute so I went with this one. It is colorful and a perfect 24”x36”. My only complaint is that it came folded in an envelope instead of rolled in a tube, which is why you see the creases. But for what I am using it for it is still perfect for me.

From Planning to Completing, having a full year visual will be a big help to me

It has a dry erase surface, so I bought these Dry Erase Markers. And to really make things stand out on the calendar I also ordered these Adorable Planner Stickers that will show things like Dentist Appointments, Vacations, “Do Not Disturb”, Night Out, Night In and more.

I know I will never stay 100% on top of things. Is there anyone who does? But here’s to all of us achieving at least a few of our goals this year.

If you have some favorite ways you keep your sh*t together that I haven’t mentioned here, please let me know in the comments!

NEGATIVE SPACE – January Creative Prompt

In art, negative space is the empty area in a photo or design intentionally constructed as part of the composition. Sometimes this brings attention to the actual subject, sometimes it may be part of the subject.

Trees with Negative space - On Davis Time
One of the few photos I have taken with negative space – this is not my forte!

In 2022 I did post a creative prompt every month, but I failed miserably at keeping up with challenging myself to complete them. I am hoping to do better this year, even if it is only one photo a month. Will you join me? I would love to see what you create – use the hashtag #ODTcreativechallenge2023

If you would like to follow me on social to see my “NEGATIVE SPACE” creation(s) you can find me on Facebook (On Davis Time), Instagram (@OnDavisTime), and Twitter (@TressieLDavis)
